Someone there may have played the older and newer versions of the HB models and could give you a better handle on the differences between the models.The PRS SE Hollowbody II Piezo we received for review is a great-looking guitar, with its gloss-finished Black Gold Burst body constructed of laminated mahogany sides with laminated maple for the beveled top and back. You could ask the folks on Vintage Rocker in the Birds and Moons section too if you want the opinions of a group of PRS aficionados. There are two variations of the Hollowbody II in the American made PRS Core Series: the Hollowbody II Piezo and McCarty 594 Hollowbody II. If you really want a guitar dedicated to a traditional jazz clean tone, I wonder if the new JA-15 or one of the older Archtop models might be a better fit? You could also check out some of the older hollowbody models if you can find them used (HBI: Maple back and Spruce top or HB Spruce: Spruce top and back). In terms of tone, the HBII doesn't really strike me as a traditional jazz box, but more of a blues/jazz hybrid guitar. I'm not sure if you're interested in the piezo or not. I've had my HBII for about 10 years and it has been rock solid. The thing I really love about PRS guitars is the consistency in QC and the attention to detail in setup and playability. It's not a particularly dark sounding guitar, but you could certainly get some nice traditional clean jazz tones out of it on the neck pickup with the tone rolled back. I'm not sure of the specific differences between the pickups (I haven't played a new HBII or a newer PRS guitar with 57/08 pickups), but I love my HBII. The McCarty 594 Hollowbody II brings a new set of features to one of our most beloved models: the Hollowbody II. I believe they now come with 57/08 pickups.
